What to do if your package gets stolen

Is there anything more disappointing than waiting days (or weeks) for a package, only for it to get swiped from your doorstep before you can get to it? With the rise of so-called porch pirates, this situation has become all too common. However, if a package has been stolen from you, don’t worry–all isn’t necessarily lost. Although each carrier handles stolen packages differently, many offer solutions to help you recoup the loss.

If you want to protect the products you buy, it's important to consider product protection. With an extended warranty plan, you won't have to worry if your items arrive damaged, or break down due to use over time, because you'll be covered. What should you do if your package gets stolen?

Wondering what to do if your package has been stolen? Check out these tips.

Amazon

If your Amazon package was stolen, you’re in luck. Amazon customer service tends to be pretty helpful compared to many other companies when it comes to stolen packages. If it’s been over 48 hours since the time it was supposed to have been delivered (in rare cases, packages can show that they’re delivered when they haven’t been yet, so it’s worth waiting a little while to make sure), it’s time to reach out to customer service. Here’s what to do:

  • First, log into your Amazon account and find the Customer Portal.
  • Second, click on the “Customer Service” icon.
  • Next, select the order that's missing, and follow the steps to report that the item is missing.
  • Finally, select the “I Need More Help” icon at the bottom right of the page, where you can find more information about filing a missing claim.

Please note that this process applies to orders that come directly through Amazon. If you ordered from a third party seller, Amazon generally recommends that you reach out to them first. You can do this by navigating to your Orders page, then reporting a problem with your order.

Fedex

Was your stolen package delivered by Fedex? Luckily, Fedex offers a quick and easy claims process. Simply collect documentation about the stolen package, such as your order confirmation, pictures if possible, and any other information that could be relevant (the more information, the better!), and simply visit their website to file a quick and easy Fedex claim.

UPS

Missing a package that was delivered by UPS? Simply log into your UPS profile and provide the required claims information. You can also track the claim’s status online for updates throughout the process.

While UPS does work closely with you and any other parties to track down your package, unfortunately, there is still no guarantee that they will reimburse you unless there is evidence that proves the stolen package was their fault. However, it’s still worth filing a claim, even if you’re not sure. UPS’s customer service will help you get to the bottom of what happened to your stolen package.

How to file a police report online

Regardless of the carrier that delivered your package or the retailer you purchased it from, it’s also a good idea to file a police report. Alerting local authorities about the theft not only increases the chances that your package could be recovered, but also helps make your neighborhood a safer place. If porch pirates struck once, they’ll probably do so again, and alerting the police of the situation is a great way to lower those chances.

Although in some areas you have to visit the police department in person to file a report, some locations let you file a police report online. To find out if your local police department offers online report filing, simply visit their website. If there is, you’re good to go! Just make sure you’re filling out the correct report.

Final thoughts

Although it’s disappointing to find that your package is missing before you even got to open it, remember, in most cases, there’s still hope that your package can either be recovered or replaced at no charge to you. Just be sure to follow the steps above based on the carrier and company you ordered from to file a claim and get your money’s worth out of your purchase.

Speaking of getting your money’s worth, don’t forget to think about product protection for your new item. Product protection can provide peace of mind in the event that your new item gets damaged or broken.
