AppleCare vs. AppleCare+

First, it’s important to understand the difference between an AppleCare claim and an AppleCare+ claim. While most Apple products come with a one year manufacturer’s warranty known as AppleCare, Apple customers can also choose to purchase AppleCare+, which is Apple’s version of an extended warranty plan.

While AppleCare offers basic coverage for manufacturer’s defects and hardware issues, AppleCare+ offers additional coverage and extends the time of coverage. While AppleCare and AppleCare+ are different, the process for filing a claim is the same.

How to file an AppleCare claim

Ready to file a claim, but not sure where to start? Let’s take a look at the steps for filing an AppleCare or AppleCare+ claim:

Have your information ready

First, it’s important to make sure you have the information that you need ready. If you have an AppleCare+ plan, you’ll need your AppleCare+ agreement, but either way, you will need your device’s serial number and proof of purchase.

Use the Apple cost estimator

It’s helpful to know how much you should plan on paying if your Apple device is damaged. Fortunately, for most repairs, this is easy to find out. Simply visit the Apple support website and use the cost estimator tool. You’ll input the damage that needs to be fixed, your device type and model, and you’ll receive a cost estimate.

Sign into your account

After using the cost estimate tool, sign into your Apple account and provide the needed information about your device, such as your purchase date and your device’s serial number.

Choose how to repair your device

Apple offers three options for repairing your device. You can choose to mail your device in to be serviced, bring it into the Apple store yourself, or, in some cases, schedule a time for an Apple employee to come to your house to fix your device (this option is only available for some devices, such as Mac's).

Pay a deductible

Most AppleCare+ claims require a deductible. Although the deductible costs significantly less than what it would cost to repair your device out of pocket, it’s important to keep in mind that even with an AppleCare+ plan, you will need to be prepared to pay some amount when your device is serviced.

Wait for your device to be repaired

Once you’ve submitted your Apple device for repair, Apple will take care of the rest.  While some repairs are quick and simple, others require more time. For some devices, Apple will send a replacement in the meantime, so be sure to check if your device is included in that benefit.

Drawbacks of AppleCare+

While there are some benefits of filing an AppleCare claim, it’s also important to keep in mind that there are some drawbacks. Even if you upgrade to AppleCare+, you’ll find that AppleCare+ doesn’t offer coverage for everything. For example, damage that is considered intentional or reckless by Apple will be rejected from coverage.

Is AppleCare the best option for you?

As you can see, filing an AppleCare claim isn’t as easy as you’d think.
